Welcome to Tool Labs
Hello Alex brollo, welcome to the Tool Labs project! Your request for access was processed and you should be able to login now via ssh at tools-login.wmflabs.org
. To get started, check the help page and the migrating from the Toolserver page. You can also ask in our IRC channel at #wikimedia-labs connect or send an e-mail to our mailing list labs-l@lists.wikimedia.org – thank you, and have fun using Tools! Tim Landscheidt (talk) 17:35, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
Running bots on tools-login, etc. as part of the itsource tool
Running noninteractive processes on the bastion servers is not allowed by the rules; please submit them as jobs to grid instead; you can find information on how to do that here. Thanks! --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 00:09, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
- As you can see, after a painful debugging series of interactive sessions, now I can run my job from the grid. A question: if/when I need an interactive session of python from console, can I simply launch "jsub python"? --Alex brollo (talk) 12:54, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
- In theory, the grid offers the
qlogin
/qrsh
commands which allows you to start an interactive session on a execution node in the grid, but that can be very complicated. In general, debugging ontools-login
or even bettertools-dev
is perfectly fine; on this occasion, though, I saw several Python processes ontools-login
consuming several hundred megabytes, and that looked more like a bot running amok to me :-). --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 13:13, 27 February 2014 (UTC)- I'm facing with a difficult task: to grab from the web large pdf files (dozen of megabyte); to convert the into high-resolution tiffs by gs (hundred of megabytes); to split & crop them by PIL (again, hundreds of megabytes); to zip them and to upload them into Internet Archive with internetarchive python tool. There zipped tiffs will be derived into good djvu files with an excellent OCR layer so that they can be uploaded into Commons and used into wikisource. The souce library shares 14000 ancient, rare and precious texts.
- I asked for help and suggestions into #irc with no result (keep into consideration that my programming skill is very far from a professional level). I'm in touch with Tpt who encouraged me to go ahead with my bold project, and who shares itsource account from some days: I'm sure that I've much to learn from him. --Alex brollo (talk) 14:41, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

Darti accesso non costa nulla e sono certo non farai nulla di male. Se ti capita un giorno di voler provare a farci qualcosa bene; se non capita, non importa. --Nemo 20:01, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
