Becoming an administrator
How to request for an administrator? Zixuan 18:20, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
- If someone contributes high-quality and low-problem edits for a long period of time, and if they need the extra tools that admins get, then they will be considered -- the act of long-term contribution would let the person know whom to ask.
- If they have advanced permissions on other wikis, that helps a lot.

Now that Wikitech is connected to SUL, I propose we adapt the MediaWiki.org policy that allows stewards and global sysops to act here by default:

Village pump or Admin request pages
We need:
- A Village Pump/Cafe, or Requests page, or some kind of easily identifiable location for Wikimedians to leave questions and requests (and link to it in the MediaWiki:Sidebar)
- Something like mw:Template:Edit Protected, so that simple requests can be left on the relevant talkpage. (and further related setup so that the template/category is visible to admins! Perhaps on this project-page for KISS reasons?)
Cf. phab:T387409 where Pppery had to resort to phabricator for an edit-request to a protected page.
Does anyone have energy to setup something like those things? Or are there any further clarifications/decisions to make before we do so? Quiddity (talk) 23:53, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
- A Village Pump seems reasonable to me. I wonder if there is a list of things that are recommended for bootstrapping an on-wiki community that we could get inspiration from? Something like m:Small wiki toolkits/Starter kit but for the social bits more than the technical bits. -- BryanDavis (talk) 01:13, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
- Re: List: I think that's the main page that we're missing here. However, I made a related list for the Wikifunctions launch over at f:User:Quiddity (WMF)/List of initial wiki pages, if you/others want to browse/use that for other possibilities.
- Re: VP here: I've now created a Wikitech:Village pump, with a header from Wikitech:Village pump/Header (please watchlist those two pages!). [I took details from mediawiki-wiki's and outreach-wiki's versions.]
- Edit/overhaul freely! I was just fixing the 'blank page' stasis. :>
- Do you think that's ready to add to MediaWiki:Sidebar?
- What's the best way to get more admins to watchlist it? (Aside from pinging them all there, which I guess works ok?)
- Re: Template: I'll leave that idea for now, as maybe the VP is enough, given the low frequency of the need. KISS, etc!
